Today's article in the Wall Street Journal reminded me of the importance of this area of technology. It noted that the use of electronic health data had surpassed the 50% mark, now in use by over half of U.S. doctors. Since the deadline for using electronic health records for reimbursement of medicare patients is in 2015, this is a focus of intense activity.
As a patient of Kaiser here in California, I know first hand the kinds of issues that crop up during the migration from paper records to electronic ones. The transition from the old technology to the new was painful at first -- It took my nurse perhaps 3 times as long to process me into the hospital the first time she used the new system. But relatively quickly, the use of the electronic record system became markedly faster than the old manual one. And staff knows a lot more about me and my medical history (like allergies) when I show up now!
