If you're an appliance manufacturer or involved with products meant for consumers rather than for businesses, you'll want to carefully review the list of standards above.  These recent releases can have an impact on your organization.

Of special interest are the 2 new ISO standards for consumer product safety and product recall.  These really reflect the changes in the standards world that are leading to more and more "management" standards.  These are standards that provide users with guidelines on best practices in the "soft arts," like human resources, quality and environmental management, and customer service.

Years ago when I took over Document Center, standards focused on engineering matters, like materials and products.  There were only a few military documents that addressed quality and other "fuzzier" issues.  With the shift to ISO 9001 certification from the old MIL-Q-9858 system, we've seen an unintended consequence -- more and more areas of business and work life in general are being reviewed for possible standardization.  You can think of standards for teachers as a good example of the kinds of changes I'm thinking of.

It's just not possible to keep up with all these new documents unless you're a standards distributor like Document Center.  The constant inflow of new documents and our interest in spotting trends that can help our customers provide better quality products with reduced liability means that we can help you with the documents you need.  Rely on Document Center Inc. to be your Standards Experts!

Fire safety and fire testing standards remain as relevant today as when they first made an appearance with the establishment of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) in the late 1800's.  As you can see, products as diverse as electronics, textiles, furniture, flooring, and manufacturing equipment all need to be tested for fire characteristics and resistance.

NFPA publishes a number of useful reports containing statistics on fire, fire damage, and fire injury.  One interesting fact is that a U.S. household can expect 5 fires during a lifetime (most, luckily, are too small to report to a fire department).  The good news is that fire safety standards like those above are having a positive effect on the number of deaths from fires reported in the U.S.  While in 1905, 105 people out of a million were killed by fire, in 2007 that number was down to 9 out of a million.

If your product requires the use of fire safety and testing standards, please make Document Center your vendor of choice.  We are here to help you with all your standards requirements and questions.  We're your Standards Experts.

When we were recently visiting Savannah, GA, for the SES The Society for Standards Professionals Conference, we were able to see the ships with containers going down the river and under the bridge.  Living in the San Francisco Bay Area ourselves, we're familiar with the transport of goods all over the world via ship.  But it was remarkable to see these vessels loaded down with the containers up close and personal!

It reminds me of the importance of freight distribution standards.  The fact that these containers can be stacked up so precisely and moved on and off the ships so quickly is just remarkable.  And it's standards that make that possible.

For the standards you need in your business, Document Center is here to help you.  Make us your Standards Experts.

OK, if you're like me, you like the smell when you get into a new car.  Well, it's called off-gassing and it's the smell of the materials in the automobile as they release chemicals into the air.  Or perhaps you've noticed the air quality when you enter someone's home where there's a smoker and the windows are always closed.  Or a workplace where sewing takes place, which means there's a lot of lint released during the normal course of business.  You have to ask yourself, is this really healthy?

Ambient air standards helps folks measure what's in the air in enclosed places to determine the quality of the environment.  A lot of times we think of air quality standards having to do with air in non-enclosed spaces -- the smog levels we in California are always thinking about.  But interior air can be just as critical in maintaining health.  Consider folks who have lung issues.  It's a big deal for them.

Because air quality is dependent on measurement, you'll see that there are many ASTM International standards in this category.  You'll find more ASTM standards like this at our Document Center List of ASTM Standards on Ambient Atmospheres.  Remember, ASTM was formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials.  ASTM International testing standards remain a critical component of most measurement-based processes.

Document Center Inc. has been distributing standards since 1982.  Be sure to rely on us for all your standardization needs.

Most people do not realize that there is a system in place around the world to create and maintain products in compliance with a standards system that promotes interoperability, safety, and lifecycle concerns.  We naturally assume that the things we use are made wisely and with our best interests in mind!  But there is an entire worldwide effort at work behind the scenes to make sure that the products we use don't harm us.

With furniture standards, you can see that there is an on-going effort to reduce the risk of flammability and toxicity, as well as to confirm that these products can handle the load we would expect of them.  Additionally, children's furniture has a special place, as with cribs and the issue of sudden infant death.

No matter what industry you're in, standards play an important role in the design and manufacture of goods that will be accepted the world over.  Allow Document Center to assist you in identifying the standards you need and maintaining your collection.  We provide you with auditing services for the standards you currently have, monitoring services to make sure you don't miss revision updates and the release of errata and other changes, and current awareness services similar to this blog.

Natural gas is in the news with regularity these days.  Coverage is wide-ranging, from the concerns about fracking and explosions to the economic benefits of natural gas exploration in the U.S. and the use of natural gas as a clean and cheap fuel for U.S. business and government automobile fleets.

These type of standards for natural gas will center on the analysis of the gas itself for various components, like water and mercury.  You'll also find rating schemes like the quality designations above.  And of course the standards for adding an odor to natural gas as a safety precaution.

If you're involved in the use of natural gas as a utility, as a supplier, or as an industrial user, you'll certainly want to have a source for standards that will alert you to changes in the standards you currently use.  But if you rely on Document Center, you'll not only get timely update notifications but you'll also find out about new releases in your area of interest.  With the liabilities associated with the use of natural gas, no organization can afford to be ignorant of the changes that occur in this area.

That's why thousands of companies make Document Center their Standards Experts!

Have you ever wondered about how standards are generated?  At the SES (the Society for Standards Professionals) conference this week, I was struck by the presentation of one of the ANSI Next Generation Award winners, Jonathan Colby.  He mentioned that one of the benefits of being selected to participate in the IEC Young Professionals Program (prior to the ANSI award!) was learning the protocol of developing standards within the IEC system.

Of course, as a long-time standards person myself, I know that there's a standard for that!  But getting involved in standards development is a great way to shape the future of the industry you're in as well as to network with folks whose passion is the same as yours!

Standardization is not a haphazard affair.  There are definite rules about how standards are developed that are intended to insure that the process is open and fair.  These protocols are guided by the associations who oversee the adoption of standards in any given jurisdiction.  And they are one of the basic requirements as developing nations move towards acceptance of products in the international marketplace by putting a standardization program into  place.

Document Center Inc. wants you to be an informed standards user and to encourage you and your company to get involved in the standards process in any way you can.  If you need more information on how to find standards in your area of interest and identify how to help shape those standards, do let me know.

ASTM International (formerly the American Society of Testing and Materials) has developed many material standards that are used the world over.  One handy way to purchase these standards is by getting one or more of the various volumes that comprise the consolidated set.

For the Stainless Steel Standards, you can purchase the ASTM Volume 01.03 Paper (book format) or the ASTM Volume 01.03 CD Rom.  It is a snap-shot of the ASTM standards on the topic.  When you do purchase standards in bulk like this (in a compilation), there is only one drawback -- You will not get notified when individual standards are updated.  However, if you use many ASTM standards on a topic, it's an easy way to develop your standards collection.

Document Center will help you develop and maintain your standards library.  Make us your Standards Experts!

Way back when, the primary quality document that we sold here at Document Center was the MIL-Q-9858, the military specification "Quality Program Requirements."  Along came MIL Spec reform and the MIL-Q-9858 was cancelled without replacement.  But that doesn't mean there's a lack of quality specs and standards to use...

And FYI: You'll be seeing more of the international management standards on quality being updated.  There is a move afoot to set up these management standards in a similar format.  This will enable companies that are certified to multiple quality schemes to streamline their processes, as the requirements become "harmonized."

If your company is registered for certification to ISO 9000, AS 9100, FDA Medical Device requirements, or any of the other management standards, you should consider making Document Center your standards provider.  We provide expert assistance in determining the editions and documents you need.  We monitor those standards to make sure your copies are up-to-date.  And we can assist you in spotting trends and new releases that will impact your business.
